As millions of Americans head to the polls on November 5, the nation waits anxiously for the results. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump are locked in a heated battle, with recent polls indicating a very close race.
In Short
- Kamala Harris loses lead in Pennsylvania
- Donald Trump ahead in 6 swing states
- Polling is still on in Nevada, early trends yet to come out
Five of the seven battleground states in the US – that will decide the electoral fate of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris – are witnessing a tight contest. The former President has already won North Carolina and is leading in five swing states at the moment.
Donald Trump secured 25,71,258 votes in North Carolina with 50.8 per cent, while Kamala Harris secured 24,36,454 votes, securing 48.1 per cent of votes in the key swing state, according to AP tracker. The Republican candidate is leading Harris in Wisconsin, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Michigan, albeit by a slender margin, as per AP projections at 9 am IST.
The polling is still on in Nevada and early projections are yet to come out.
Kamala Harris was leading in Pennsylvania since the results started coming in, however, she lost the lead to Trump, who is now ahead by roughly two percentage points.
A total of 270 electoral votes is needed to win the presidency, and while the race is still wide open, both candidates are eyeing history. Harris hopes to become the first woman to hold the nation’s highest office, while Trump is aiming to make history as only the second former president to win a non-consecutive term.
As per early projections, Trump has maintained a strong presence in traditionally red states, securing wins in Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
He also added 40 electoral votes from Texas, which he has carried in every election since 2016. In Ohio, Trump defeated Harris to claim the state’s 17 electoral votes.
Meanwhile, Harris has found success in Democratic strongholds, winning big in New York, where she added 28 electoral votes to her total. She also maintained the blue hold on Illinois (19 votes), New Jersey (14 votes), and other states in the Northeast, as well as in Colorado and Washington, D.C.
The attention has shifted to several battleground states, where the election’s outcome could still go either way. Georgia, a key swing state, is currently leaning in Trump’s favour. With 66% of votes counted, Trump leads Harris by 5.7 percentage points, positioning him to claim Georgia’s 16 electoral votes.
In Pennsylvania, Harris initially led early voting trends, but Trump has since gained a slim lead, with 20% of the vote counted. The state, which holds 20 electoral votes, remains too close to call.
The swing states together contribute 93 electoral votes. Trump has won 16 electoral votes in North Carolina and is expected to win another 16 after winning Georgia.
Georgia is leaning towards Trump, where, with 66 per cent of votes counted, he leads Harris by 5.7 points. To win the US elections, Kamala Harris would need to sweep Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, but Trump is currently leading in all the battleground states.
Trump currently has won 230 electoral votes and his tally would easily cross 270 should he sweep the remaining swing states. Kamala Harris’s victory in California, which contributes the maximum electoral votes (54), would be mere consolation if Trump continues his lead in the battleground.
